The Truth About Network Marketing: Debunking the Myths

Just as various sorts of business opportunities continue to sprout like mushrooms on a rainy day, so do misconceptions about network marketing abound practically everywhere.

Are you one of those people who get confused as to what network marketing is and what it is not? Let's have a clearer understanding of the concept and the practice by debunking some of the myths behind network marketing.

*MYTH NO. 1: Network Marketing is the same as the Pyramid Scheme.

**FACT NO. 1: Network Marketing is NOT a Pyramid Scheme.

Pyramid schemes are illegal, whereas network marketing is legal.

When you participate in a pyramid scheme, you shell out a certain amount of money for practically nothing. You get no goods or services in exchange for your precious money. Instead, you merely pay for luck or for a chance. Why? Because only the person or persons on top of the pyramid will win.

Practically a gambling scam, a pyramid scheme is merely a venue for transferring funds from the hands of one person to those of another.

In contrast, when you participate in network marketing, you are actually getting involved in a legal business system. In such set-up, real and legal products and/or services are distributed among huge networks of clients or buyers.

*MYTH NO. 2: Network Marketing is the same as the Ponzi Scheme.

**FACT NO. 2: Network Marketing is NOT a Ponzi Scheme.

First, what is a Ponzi scheme? A Ponzi scheme is an investment scheme named after Charles K. Ponzi, who operated such a financial scheme in 1919-1920. In the said scheme, the older members or investors receive their proceeds or profits completely from the funds invested by newer members.

Unlike the pyramid scheme, a Ponzi scheme does not necessarily follow a particular hierarchical system. In fact, only one person or company is in charge of collecting money from new investors. The said collecting agent or agency then uses such fund to award the older investors with the proceeds promised to them.

Thus, when you get involved in a Ponzi scheme, you are actually just helping the collecting agency to pay off the profits it has promised to the older investors. The organizers behind a Ponzi scheme make you believe that you will MAKE MONEY WITH THEM; however, the truth is that they are actually TAKING MONEY FROM YOU.

Clearly, network marketing is no way similar to a Ponzi scheme because just like in a pyramid scheme, no goods and services are involved in a Ponzi scheme.

*MYTH NO. 3: Network Marketing can make you rich in an instant.

**FACT NO. 3: Network Marketing is NOT a way to get rich in an instant.

If you think the promises offered to you by a certain business opportunity are too good to be true, then chances are they're really just that --- too good to be true!

True, earning and gaining wealth by getting involved in network marketing can be a faster, easier way --- but that is, if compared to traditional or conventional business methods.

Certainly, network marketing can help you become rich; however, you will still have to invest not just your money, but more importantly, your time, patience, and efforts. In general, you will have to wait for about five to seven years before you can really reap the fruits of your hard work.

*MYTH NO. 4: Network Marketing is so easy that even lazy people can derive abundant benefits from it.

**FACT NO. 4: Network Marketing is NOT for lazy people.

It is a common notion that network marketing is equivalent to easy money. Many people decide to jump into the network marketing bandwagon thinking that they can just look for a few contacts and then just relax and wait for the checks to arrive. Are they correct? Very far from it!

In fact, the most successful people in network marketing are those who work the hardest. Just like in any other business, in network marketing, the most industrious and diligent workers who toil the most also reap the most abundant of harvests.

If you want to be successful --- and rich, of course! --- in network marketing, you must be prepared to give it the best of your efforts.

*MYTH NO. 5: Network Marketing is only for salespeople.

**FACT NO. 5: Network Marketing is NOT just for people who have had experience or expertise in sales.

Although it would be to your great advantage if you have had prior sales experience, having none would not hinder you from getting into and succeeding in network marketing.

In this modern age, technologies such as the Internet and automated marketing system enable you to connect with the world and promote yourself and your products/services. What you really need is to fully understand the network marketing program that you are into, interact with as many people as possible, decide which ones would really be serious in this field, and, most importantly, make sure that they also fully comprehend the system that you all got involved with.

Indeed, you don't have to be a salesperson to be able to play the game that a decade ago was almost exclusively in the salesperson's court.

MLB Vintage World Series Films - Baltimore Orioles 1966, 1970 & 1983

MLB Vintage World Series Films - Baltimore Orioles 1966, 1970 & 1983
All the glory and classic moments of the Orioles World Series Championships from 1966 to 1983 are digitally preserved on this official DVD. Spanning both three decades and three managers--Hank Bauer, Earl Weaver, and Joe Altobelli--the enduring, common trait of the Baltimore Orioles success was stellar pitching, well-timed power, and peerless defense. The arrival of Frank Robinson in 1966 catapulted the Orioles to their first Fall Classic . Baltimore's pitchers dominated, holding the Los Angeles Dodgers to just two runs--for the entire four-game World Series. Four Octobers later, the Birds power hitting and fielding were on display. The rally-ending defense of Brooks Robinson and the club's 10 home runs in five games helped the O's to a second Championship. In 1983, the familiar formula and a familiar face held an encore. The Orioles staff, including Jim Palmer who provided a bridge to the 1966 victors, stifled the Philadelphia Phillies allowing only seven runs in the five games.

Customer Review: A Must for ANY Baltimore Orioles Fan

As a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, we really haven't had much to cheer about in the last ten years.

It's nice that MLB put the World Series Films from all three Orioles championships on one DVD.

Each film runs about 40 minutes long with highlights from each game.

1966 - The Orioles shock the world and beat the favored LA Dodgers behind the masterful pitching of Jim Palmer, Wally Bunker, and Dave McNally. Homeruns from Paul Blair, and Brooks and Frank Robinson helped too.

1970 - Possibly the best team in Birds history. McNally, Palmer, and Mike Cuellar provide the pitching. Boog Powell and the Robinsons provide the power to beat the mighty Big Red Machine with Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, and Tony Perez.

1983 - The last hurrah. The Birds have a brilliant mix of veterans like Rick Dempsey and Jim Palmer, and young players Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken Jr. to beat the Philadelphia Phillies in five.

Next year will be 25 long years since the last championship.

As for the MLB logo at the top of the screen mentioned by the other reviewer. I agree, it's completely unnecessary, but after like five minutes, you really don't notice it.

Don't let that prevent you from two hours of Baltimore Orioles glory.

Customer Review: Logo Imprint Compromises Presentation

I was thrilled when I first read that MLB Productions was finally issuing a DVD version of highlights of the Baltimore Orioles' three World Series victories. I already owned the VHS versions, one of which (the 1970 World Series) had a major flaw in the audio synchronization (watching the last third of the highlights was like viewing a badly dubbed foreign film). Finally, I could own all three highlights reels on one disc and without the sync error on the 1970 World Series.

Much to my dismay, the MLB logo is permanently, and obtrusively, displayed on the upper right corner of all three programs. What's that all about? Does MLB Productions think I'm going to illegally copy and distribute stills? Thank goodness I don't own a plasma TV or I'd be staring at that stupid logo for the next five years!

Sound and picture quality are okay otherwise. But....that logo is really annoying.

Customer Review: Terrible

I'm sure Mr. Gitomer is a good salesman since he, after all, managed to sell me his book. But he's not a good author and his book is not worth the time. His practical advice ranges from things like "don't whine", "buy your own laptop if your company won't buy you one" to "stay up late to prepare for next day instead of watching TV."

Maybe there is some good advice in this book for children selling lemonade down the street, but its a joke for any true Sales/Marketing professional. There are tons of better books out there, don't waste your time on this one. For good books on complex sales, try "Solution Selling" by Bosworth or "Hope is not a strategy" by Page. They lay out a proven, scientific and structured approach to the entire sales cycle. My company uses it routinely to great effect.

Solution Selling: Creating Buyers in Difficult Selling Markets

Hope Is Not a Strategy: The 6 Keys to Winning the Complex Sale

Customer Review: Gems of wisdom for all businesspeople

Gitomer is a salesman at heart. He manages to distill old and known truths and success factors into a creative and inspiring book. He constantly uses the .5 element in all the lists in the book (and his other books) that thus have become his trademark. Nonetheless, it is not annoying but easy fun.

This book might be too simple for experienced salespeople, but for me, who is just beginning this road was an eye-opener. And a very happy one too: sales is not about shoving people stuff down their throat and making them pay for it, rather it is an ethical profession in which you try to do your utmost to understand the customer and deliver him what truly brings value. This goes beyond pure sales, but should be fundamental to any business person or even every professional! If you can take a step back from your current profession, there are many lessons in this book that might be worthwhile in your everyday life:

- how to build relationships

- how to help the other person instead of (first) helping yourself

- how to try to understand others allows for improved performance

And it gives very practical tips and instructions on how and what do do each of these things, while challenging you to keep thinking.

For me, an inspiration to buy all his books (although I am sure the same mantra is repeated there). People don't like to be sold, but they love to buy!!
